Heart of Darkness; Pre-Discussion
This is an extremely emotional book. So, contrary to things we've been reading up to this point, which have mostly been fact-related and historically-based, I want to gear tomorrow's discussion toward the question of social corruption and how we'd deal with the effects of social corruption in an African society we were seeking to develop. Just some food for thought while you're preparing for class tomorrow.

This book provided a nice change of pace from what we've been reading. I am interested in what everyone has to say today. I got confused a lot due to the different words and style of writing this book has. As the book finishes up with Kurtz significant other she talks about how kind he was. Her description of him does not match the man that the story teller met. There seems to be this weird juggle of a man who is corrupt yet able to persuade and win people over. He threatened to shoot the manager because due to his greed and the manager simply brushes it off because well... you can't blame Kurtz. Did I understand all of that right? I don't know. I also don’t quite understand the popular phrase “The Horror! The Horror!” Is he reflecting on/ realizing all he had done? Or that he worked so hard and still didn’t get to carry out his great plans? Or the pain and grief he was experiencing? I need a little enlightenment. Anyways it will be fun to discuss this book.
